Previews - Some of the Best Comics Coming out in December 2017
Lots of cool comic books are coming out in December! Let’s narrow down some of the most exciting titles, take a look at what they’re all about and speculate! Together!
Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini #2 - By Cynthia von Buhler
Earlier in the Summer, Titan Comics announced they would be launching Hard Case Crime -- a new imprint spinning hard-boiled noir yarns. Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Handcuffed Houdini was the first title out of the gate and it did not disappoint! The story follows an unappreciated private eye, rabbit-loving Minky, who leaves her dad’s detective agency to solve a magical mystery involving Harry Houdini. Yes, the world-famous escape artist. The first issue was dark, gritty and totally engrossing. Von Buhler's art so perfectly captures pulp novel essence even superstar author Neil Gaiman (Sandman, Good Omens) said, “I was seduced by Cynthia von Buhler’s artwork. She is a wonder.”
Kid Lobotomy #3 - By Peter Milligan, Tess Fowler
The inaugural series from Black Crown the IDW imprint curated by Shelley Bond (the master AND commander of everything DC’s Vertigo did for some of its best years) continues! Milligan and Fowler tell the tale of a dysfunctional family of hoteliers. This issue promised “bug-on-bug sex, spontaneous combustion and Franz Kafka!" Join Kid Lobotomy as he flees from his sister and comes face-to-face with a cockroach man! It might sound weird but it’s just another day at “The Suites,” America’s Strangest Hotel!
Doomsday Clock #2 - By Geoff Johns, Gary Frank
The story that began in the pages of Rebirth finally pays off in the biggest way possible: the Watchmen characters will meet the DC Universe. Everything is still very mysterious regarding the exact plot details of this series but the solicitation promises Batman will “discover another relic from the Watchmen world,” that Lex Luthor will pay “a devil’s bargain,” and that “killer clowns trek through Gotham seeking a madman.” Johns is the master at event-storytelling and knows how to continuously pull the rug out from under his audience, so expect a ton of twists and turns as the Doomsday Clock counts down!
Bloodshot Salvation #4 - By Jeff Lemire, Mico Suayan
Jeff Lemire is one of the most innovative writers working in comics today. His imaginative and often gut-wrenching creator-owned work is prolific and he brings that ingenuity with him when he tackles other people’s characters too. The best example of Lemire’s ability to emotionally ground a character is on display in all the work he’s done for Valiant’s albino anti-hero, Bloodshot. This issue finally reveals the origin of Rampage - a sort of “imperfect reflection” of Bloodshot that’s augmented by the same nanites, but fueled by hate instead of a burning sense of justice. The Valiant Universe has never been in more capable hands than it is with Lemire at the wheel. Plus, Suayan’s crisp art and smooth storytelling is a true pleasure to behold.
DC Universe Holiday Special 2017 #1 - By Various Writers and Illustrators
To celebrate the holidays DC Comics has enlisted the help of pretty much every writer and artist who works for them. Stories about Superman, Sgt. Rock, Swamp Thing, Batman and more are going to be told by the likes of Tom King, Greg Rucka, Denny O’Neil, Max Landis, Neil Googe, Steve Epting, Rafael Albuquerque and many, many more. All that PLUS an Andy Kubert cover! Just look at how gorgeous that thing is!!! Merry Christmanukah!
