Iconic Comic Creator Colleen Doran Joins the Wizard World Hall of Legends
There are many words that can be used to describe Colleen Doran: writer, artist, creator, icon, and now legend. Today, we are proud to announce that Doran is the seventh person to join the Wizard World Hall of Legends. Doran is coming to Wizard World Comic Con Oklahoma City, and fans at the show can watch her receive the award at a special ceremony on Friday, October 27, at 7 pm on the main entertainment stage at the Cox Convention Center.
The Wizard World Hall of Legends was created to honor comic creators “who built the industry and continued the traditions.” That’s something that Doran has done for nearly 40 years, first with her creator-owned title, A Distant Soil, which she wrote and drew. Doran actually created that series when she was only 12 years old, and she broke into the industry as a teenager. 2019 will mark the 40th anniversary of A Distant Soil, which stands complete as a multi-volume sci-fi epic.
While Doran's work has evoked some comparison to the early romance artists in comics, her style transcends traditional genre trappings to include elements of sci-fi, fantasy, and superheroes. Her writing is equally impressive, and Doran has established herself as one of the most remarkably talented individuals in comics. Her artistic voice is clear, whether on the page or in the scripts themselves. She is the very definition of a comic book legend. Basically, she kicks ass at everything that she does.
It would take freakin' forever to list all of Doran’s impressive credits. So we'll just stick to some of the highlights like The Sandman, Teen Titans, Legion of Superheroes, and Wonder Woman for DC,. At Marvel, she's worked on Amazing Spider-Man, Power Pack, X-Factor, Mutant X, and more. Although personally, we really love her art on The Book of Lost Souls, with writer J. Michael Straczynski. More recently, Doran illustrated Amazing Fantastic Incredible Stan Lee; an autobiography that was co-written by Lee and Peter David. Doran also landed on the New York Times Bestsellers list alongside Neil Gaiman for their graphic novel, Troll Bridge.
It's important to say that this isn't a farewell. Colleen Doran isn't about to stop making comics; we just want to honor her many contributions to the field. She's a creator with breathtaking talent, and we're really eager to see what she's working on next!
The previous inductees to the Wizard World Hall of Legends include Rob Liefeld, Trina Robbins, Jeff Smith, Mike Grell, Guy Gilchrist, and Jerry Robinson. Doran is in good company, and we’re excited to celebrate her achievements in comics.
Wizard World Comic Con Oklahoma City will begin on Friday, October 27, and run from 4-9 pm on opening day. The con continues on Saturday, October 28, from 10 am-7 pm before coming to a close on Sunday, October 29, 10 am-4 pm. Don’t forget, kids 10 and under are admitted free with paid adult!
