Gotham by Gaslight Trailer Shows a Bloody Batman in Animated Action

From the blood splattered on the WB animation logo at the beginning to the slaughtered pig carcasses in the trailer and even Batman's nosebleed (above), it's clear this DC animated movie is leaning into the R-rating.

The original Elseworlds tale set a standard for alternate takes on core DC characters, and arguably inspired the many multiple variant toys put out by Hasbro and Mattel over the years. Animated movies are able to take chances like this first, but with the live-action movies possibly about to follow suit, this could be a test case that will be watched very closely.

Bruce Greenwood returns to the role of Batman to play a Bruce Wayne of a very different vintage, with Anthony Head as Alfred and Jennifer Carpenter as Selina Kyle. The movie itself is more colorful than the comic was; here's hoping they don't take as many "colorful" liberties with the story a la The Killing Joke.

Gotham by Gaslight hits Blu-ray and digital next year.
