I love playing the bad guy in movies, because the bad guy always dies. That’s the real world. If someone asked me to play a bad guy that always gets away with it, I’d pass. That’s the very message I preach to youths who are in crisis and in trouble…the bad guy always loses and the good guy always wins. It’s the one thing movies and real life see eye-to-eye on.
Actor/Activist/Restaurateur Danny Trejo
Danny Trejo developed a prolific career in the entertainment industry with a hard-earned and atypical road to success. From years of imprisonment to helping our youth battle drug addictions, from acting to producing, and now on to restaurant ventures, Trejo’s name, face, and achievements are well recognized in Hollywood and beyond.
Trejo grew up on the streets of Los Angeles. Despite spending the latter part of his early adulthood incarcerated, Danny has worked hard to maintain a drug-free and positive lifestyle, and he celebrates over forty- five years of sobriety. Upon his release from Soledad Prison, Danny became involved in programs aimed at helping those who, like him, battled or currently battle drug and alcohol addictions.
Years into his journey as a drug and alcohol counselor, Danny visited the set of RUNAWAY TRAIN to offer support to a man he’d been counseling. Upon arriving to set, Danny was immediately offered a role as a convict. Since then, he has gone on to star in dozens of films including DESPERADO, HEAT (Robert de Niro, Al Pacino), the FROM DUSK TILL DAWN film series, CON AIR (Nicolas Cage), ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO (Johnny Depp), and the SPY KIDS movies. An appearance in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s GRINDHOUSE led to a spin-off movie based on the original trailers called, MACHETE, in which Danny plays an ex-federale with a gift for wielding a blade.
The success of MACHETE spawned a sequel, MACHETE KILLS, which boasts a star-studded cast, including Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, and Amber Heard, to name a few. Danny then co-starred in DEATH RACE: INFERNO where he reprised his role as Goldberg from DEATH RACE 2. Living up to his well-established persona, Danny next starred in the BAD ASS trilogy where he plays a veteran who avenges a friend’s murder. In BAD ASSES 2, Danny paired up with Danny Glover, who also costarred in the final film of the trilogy. Trejo later appeared alongside Tina Fay and Ray Liotta in MUPPETS MOST WANTED.
On Television, Danny reunited with Robert Rodriguez for Miramax’s From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, and he joined George Lopez in the FX series Saint George as Uncle Tio. He has had recurring roles on Sons of Anarchy and King of the Hill, and has appeared on Modern Family, Breaking Bad, and NCIS: Los Angeles among others.
Additionally, Trejo has voiced numerous animated characters. Danny can be heard as the voice of Skeleton Luis in THE BOOK OF LIFE, an animated film produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez. His other voice acting work includes the recurring character of El Moco on Netflix’s Puss in Boots, Bane on Cartoon Network’s Young Justice, and Filthy the Foot on Nickelodeon’s Pig Goat and Banana Cricket. Most recently, Danny has lent his voice on episodes of Family Guy, American Dad, and Rick and Morty. In addition, Trejo voices the character Jasper in Warner Bros’ newest animated film STORKS.
Danny’s face may currently be seen on advertisements for SlingTV. Arguably, he is best remembered on television for his role as Marcia Brady in the Super Clio Award Winning Snickers commercial. Trejo recently finished shooting DEAD AGAIN IN TOMBSTONE, the sequel to DEAD IN TOMBSTONE, for Universal. And if you didn’t think Trejo was busy enough, last year he opened the flagship restaurant of Trejo’s Tacos in the Mid-Wilshire area and the second location Trejo’s Cantina in the Hollywood area. Danny’s newest culinary endeavor, Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts recently opened in May 2017.
Despite Danny’s impressive list of credits, it’s his continuous roles as a devoted father of three and an intervention counselor that bring him the most satisfaction.
