To say Chris Milnes is an accomplished man is quite an understatement. In fact, some may consider Milnes to be the quintessential renaissance man. Encounter the 47-year-old husband, and father of two, on the street and you will find a humble and focused individual with a balanced understanding of self and those around him.
Having traveled the four corners of the globe as a professional touring musician, most notably as the lead vocalist for the American hardcore and crossover band- Mucky Pup, a group that Milnes, along with his brother John Milnes (drums) formed in their hometown of Bergenfield, New Jersey in 1986. It was during these fundamental years that Milnes would develop the business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit that he exudes today.
Signed to Roadrunner Records in 1987 and with a gold single ("U-Stink-But-I-♥-U"), video airplay on MTV and more than 150,000 albums sold worldwide to their credit, Mucky Pup would not only offer Milnes a creative outlet but would also help shape and guide his gift for design. “I was able to explore graphic design directly through the band experience. Whether it was silk-screening shirts, recording the albums and designing their covers, everything was done trial by fire and in a DIY style,” says Milnes.
Gathering his children’s LEGO® set Milnes’ imagination brought him to the prototype for what has come to be known as his first, but not last, patented product- The Helper For Square™, a unique phone and tablet accessory designed to securely support the Square Card Reader™. The Helper For Square™ fits all iPhones, iPads and many Android devices. “I am not a inventor by trade, I’ve invented things out of pure, organic necessity,” Milnes clearly states.
However, traditional methods of mass manufacturing, specifically the process of injection molding, can be very expensive and take months to negotiate. The idea of sending more jobs away from the United States also made him uneasy. There must be another way he insisted.
What happened next would be Milnes’ ticket into the new world of “pro-sumer” 3D printing. While seeking options, he stumbled upon MakerBot®, a product conceived and manufactured proudly in Brooklyn, New York using the very latest 3D printing technology. Milnes purchased a MakerBot® Replicator 2™ and literally overnight began pumping out hundreds of retail ready pieces out of his home office. With some guerilla marketing, and a lot of luck, a new business was born.
Milnes adds, “Unknown to me, Bre Pettis, the Inventor and CEO of MakerBot®, heard about my story and chose to use The Helper For Square™ as a case study of entrepreneurial success using his 3D printer.
What’s more, during the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, Pettis would take the stage to collect the Best of CES 2013 ‘Emerging Tech’ award with Milnes’ product in hand; sharing his story with the thousands in attendance as well as news outlets from around the world.
“Chris you are a trailblazer and The Helper for Square is an amazing beginning. Full steam ahead! Go!” - Bre Pettis, Inventor and CEO of Makerbot Industries
From 2013 until present Chris has created a world of pop culture mashup toys sold under the name "3D Printing by Muckychris". With a 3D printer "botfarm" of more than 20 machines he has taken to mass manufacture toys for his own design line as well as other artists.
