Cary Elwes was born Ivan Simon Cary Elwes on the 26th of October 1962 in Westminster, London. Elwes was raised in a Roman Catholic background and once served as an altar boy at Westminster Cathedral. Elwes’ parents were forced to separate when he was just 4 years old and when he had turned 12, his father took his own life.
After graduating from Harrow School, Cary Elwes attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He relocated to New York City in 1981 and further studied acting at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville. He also took acting classes at Actors Studio and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.
From his teenage years, Cary had already begun working as a production assistant on film sets. He began acting professionally in 1984, making his debut in Another Country. Elwes acted in a handful of other films before making his big break with The Princess Bride. He began acting in the small screen in 1996 – making his debut in an episode of Seinfeld. He has since appeared in numerous TV shows most notably, The Art of More, and Life in Pieces.
