The 1966 Batmobile was designed exclusively for the hit TV show Batman starring Adam West and Burt Ward. This automotive wonder was styled by Barris Kustom Industries.
Mr. Barris transformed Ford Motor Company's abandoned Futura concept car into the most recognizable car in the world.
The front of the car was fabricated to resemble the face of a bat with the hood scoop extending down to accentuate the nose and the headlights become the eyes which extend to the ears. The grill becomes the mouth and the 84 inch rear bat fins complete the image of the bat.
The vehicle features an impressive array of bat gadgets and is powered by an atomic turbine engine.
The car has bullet proof wheel wells to protect wheels and tires. Other gadgets include a nose mounted chain slicer, battering ram, bat-ray, rockets, bat-phone, radar, dash monitor, on-board bat-computer, bat-scanner, detect-a-scope, and bat-beacon. If needed, the Batmobile is capable of a quick 180 degree bat-turn thanks to two rear mounted parachutes on each side of the rear turbine exhaust. Mounted to the cockpit are front and rear bullet proof air craft canopies to protect the dynamic duo.
The 1966 Batmoble continues to influence Batmobile designs of today and is considered by many as the true Batmobile. Nearly 50 years later the 1966 Batmobile is still one of the most iconic and popular car in the world.
