5:00-5:45PM COMICS IN THE CLASSROOM (ROOM 2)
Jeff Achenzie is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education with an emphasis in English. His Masters Degree is from Wilkes University in Classroom Technology Integration, and he has taught high school English at Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for 13 years and one year at The Barack Obama Green Charter High School in New Jersey. During that time, he has worked with local libraries, colleges, and comic book retailers to build and integrate comics into the high school environment. He also taught graduate-level courses in Graphic Novels for Educators and Integrating Popular Culture into the Classroom. He is a first-time panelist at Wizard World Chicago.

In Comics in the Classroom, Jeffrey Achenzie will look at the types of media literacy and standards that teaching with comics addresses. He will show how Social Studies, Science, and English teachers can benfit from using comics, present best practice lessons, and popular titles, and address the Common Core Standards which apply to graphic novels.

1:30-2:15PM WHERE ARE THE ASIAN-AMERICAN MOVIE STARS?: WHITE WASHING IN GEEK CULTURE (ROOM 1) In the last few months, Hollywood's longstanding practice of whitewashing Asian characters has made headlines with casting decisions in Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Ghost in the Shell, where characters who were originally Asian in comics and anime were replaced with white actors for movie adaptations. Soon after, performers like Margaret Cho set Twitter aflame with the hashtag #whitewashedOUT, detailing their experiences being erased by mass media and calling for change.

Join a panel of Asian-American creators, writers, and performers for an interactive discussion on representation in popular culture, the effect it has on creators and fans, and what we can do to change the media landscape so that diversity is a reality rather than a buzzword. Panelists include Dawn Xiana Moon, founder and director of the bellydance and fire performance company Raks Geek, which made waves throughout the world with a video of a Wookiee bellydancing a four-piece Klingon band, and an award-winning singer-songwriter who originally hailed from Singapore, and Wesley Sun, writer and founder of Sun Bros Studios, which has released multiple comic titles and raised over $40,000 on Kickstarter. We will talk about how we're working to change the stories we consume from the inside out, and what geekdom as a whole can do to encourage more diverse media.

Wear your fluorescent best as we take a trip back in time to the totally tubular decade that was the 1980s. Laura Quinn, author of “Punk Charming”, will be your tour guide through the awesome mixtape that made up 80s pop culture. Starting with a quick vintage vocab/80's slang words like Valley Girl, Dude and Gag me with a spoon.
Then we’ll experience the 1980's music, movies, fashion, foods and technology of the Reagan era. Use all this wicked knowledge during a radical game of Name That Tune (Pop Culture Mixtape Edition) to wrap up this panel.

In this fun-and-educational session, celebrated writer Victor Dandridge (Origins Unknown; The Trouble With Love), Emmy-winning artist Dean Haspiel (The Red Hook; Spider-Man) and accomplished inker Mikey Babinski (Deadpool; Scarlet Spider) create a new character and story before your eyes, incorporating audience members' ideas and suggestions! Learn some writing tips and hear songs broken down into their fundamental components in real time as James shares the fundamentals of songwriting and plays through the process using original songs. Women leads and female heroes are rapidly evolving. Rey in Star Wars has spurred many discussions! What have creators fought for in the past for their women title characters and what key ingredients do creators pour into their female leads today? Hear from Genese Davis (The Holder's Dominion), Rebecca Makkai (The Borrower) and Emily Gray Tedrowe (Blue Stars) as they share their creation process for women heroes, what they think about when creating or collaborating on a female lead, and what they foresee happening to female heroes in the future.

2016 is a landmark year for three key comics characters. 75 years ago, WONDER WOMAN debuted in 1941, establishing herself as the first important female superhero! 60 years ago, in 1956, the modern FLASH first appeared, starting not only his own career, but ushering in what has come to be known as “The Silver Age of Comics!” And in 1966, 50 years ago, the BATMAN “camp” TV series debuted (starring Adam West and Burt Ward), marking what is seen as both a high and low point in the history of the character! Comics and animation writer/producer Greg Weisman (Young Justice; The Batman) and comics historian Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch; Disguised as Clark Kent) take you on a slideshow-guided tour of the histories of the heroes and the highlights of their careers in comics, on TV and in the movies!
